Marketplace Money - Live!

Marketplace is public radio's daily magazine of business and economics. But wait. Before you run away screaming "I hate business, finance and economics," let me tell you a secret: I do too! In fact, I got a "D" in college economics 101 and never took another econ course.

So when, in 1988, I was asked to create a business and economics radio show, my first reaction was "Me?! You must be nuts." But, the powers that be said they wanted a different kind of business program -- one that was interesting, even entertaining, and one which found the fascination and even humor in the subject. So, we set out to create a program which was both interesting and fun -- for normal human beings, not CEO's.

Our timing turned out to be terrific. In 1988, the world was just ending an era of leveraged buyouts, of greenmail, of Michael Milken and Ivan Boesky, etc., etc., etc. And, we were just beginning the era of "global economics." So, we created a show which wasn't just about business; instead, it was about everything, but through the lens of business and economics. In our first year on the air, I got a letter saying, "Business is important ... but not as important as life itself." That became our motto. We also received a lot of letters from people saying "I hate business and economics, but I love your show."
